5 Ways to Celebrate Your Father
1. Make him something. This could be a collage of photographs and other meaningful images that relate to his life, a painting, or a photo album/scrapbook that you put together chronicling his life–whatever you think would most reflect to him how much you care. This is something you could even get your kids or siblings involved in. The time and thought involved in a handmade gift goes a long way in letting your dad know how very special he is to you.
2. Go on an adventure together. This could mean a road trip, an African safari, a music festival, or a day-trip hiking in the mountains. When you were a kid, chances are your dad was someone who helped you explore and discover new worlds. Now you can share a place or experience that has impacted you with your dad, and explore it together. Whatever you decide would best suit your dad, you will be creating unforgettable memories as you spend time alone together in a new place without the usual distractions and stresses of everyday life.
3. Write him a long letter thanking him for all that he has done for you. Putting your feelings about your dad in a letter is a very powerful way to celebrate how you feel about him. Even if he’s not the demonstrative type or even sentimental, a letter in which you express how much he means to you and your gratitude to him for helping bring you into this world is worth a thousand times more than the typical father’s day tie. A letter is a gift that he can look at whenever he wants a reminder of how much you love him.
4. Surprise him with a book or movie with all his friends and loved ones expressing their love and admiration for him. Otherwise known as a Tribute movie, this is something you can do on your own with your home movie camera or seek professional collaboration. It’s rare in life that we give our nearest and dearest the gift of hearing from all the people who love them just how loved they really care. And your dad will be able to enjoy it for years to come.
5. Give him the gift of time. We all have a deep need to be heard and to connect. Make a promise to yourself to spend one full day a week (if you live close) or to visit him for a week every six months. While you’re with him, join him in his activities and listen to his stories. Give your dad a captive audience. You’ll be surprised how much you can learn from him when you’re not rushing around, and he’ll be grateful for the chance to connect with you in such a deep unhurried way. Let this practice of spending quality time extend beyond Father’s Day to show him how much he is loved every day not just on commercial holidays.
